Improving Retention: Preventing Employees from Quitting

Without the efforts and dedication of your trusted staff, your business would cease to exist as you know it. It’s a well-known fact that finding the right employees can have a major impact on your business, but what happens if they want to quit? While not every circumstance where an employee wants or needs to quit is foreseeable, there are a few considerations to keep in mind to ensure their happiness. With these mindful tips, you can improve your employee retention and prevent them from walking out the door. Even more importantly, address your insurance needs with a comprehensive Boston General Liability Insurance policy.

Understand “we” versus “me” mentality.

As a business owner, you’re likely focused on the big picture- your company’s future, success, and reputation- which is the “we” mentality. However, your employees are more focused on the daily aspects of the job- or the “me” mentality. Bridging the gap and recognizing their efforts and addressing their concerns can keep them loyal to your business long enough for you to achieve your long-term goals.

Focus on relationships.

Work relationships are a key factor in employee satisfaction, the ADP report Evolution of Work 2.0 survey found. Although most employees in the survey say they feel connected to their peers, few feel that way about their direct supervisors, senior management or the company owners; As a small business owner, you have a unique opportunity to forge relationships with your employees. Take the time to learn about them as people and understand what they seek from their jobs. If you’re not the direct manager of all your employees, make sure that the managers under you take the same approach, recommends Small Business Trends.

Allow them to make a difference.

Employees want to see their value and have physical evidence of their work paying off. Your employees want to make a difference, so let them. Give them opportunities to contribute, ask them about their vision and goals, and find a way to make that happen.

Be realistic.

You can promise the world in an interview, but making good on your word in real life is what will keep your employees with your company. Be up front about opportunities for growth, work-life balance, perks, etc. so that your employees don’t feel tricked into accepting an offer.
